Vintage early 1960s cotton sheath dress from Alix of Miami features a flower-splashed tropical print and easy-to-wear yet curve-hugging silhouette. The sun-drenched print colors are burnt orange, goldenrod, deep purple, yellow-green and lime on a soft white ground .
The scoop-necked, short-sleeved bodice has a modified shelf bust and center twist accent—underneath which a soft cup bra is cleverly concealed. The straight skirt has a back kick pleat for ease of motion, and the dress closes with a back metal zip. . Label reads “Pettisize by Alix of Miami”. Headed by Alix Schneidman, Miami-based Alix of Miami manufactured swimsuits, sunwear and cocktail dresses in the 1950s through the mid-1960s. The “Pettisize” label began in the 1940s, designed for women 5’4” and under; in addition to petite sized garments like this one, Alix of Miami made a range of larger-sized swimwear difficult to find in the 1960s.
Please see photo #7 for a 1962 ad featuring a Alix of Miami sundress, described as “skillfully cut to show a lovely tan (or to help produce one!) and fashioned with its own figure-shaping built in bra”. The dress retailed for $29.95, which adjusted for inflation is roughly the equivalent of $235 today.
Tag size of this dress is a vintage 14; exact measurements are bust 36”, shoulders 15”, waist 30”, hips 36”, and length 35”. (The dress has been clipped in the photos to fit the dress form; photo # 9 shows it unclipped).
