Vintage mid-1950s Panacool Panama straw hat or fedora from Calfas Hatters of Connecticut has a snap brim, teardrop crown, and jacquarded wine rayon satin hat-band.
The reeded leather sweatband is embossed “Handwoven Genuine Panama, Panacool” on one side, and “Designed by Calfas Hatters, Hartford Conn.” on the other. A cloth museum inventory tag is attached to the hatters bow at the back of the sweatband.
At the time of its closing in 1990, Calfas Hatters was one of the oldest hat shops in the country. It had been run for over four decades by Regina & Sam Lubka, Holocaust survivors who began as workers in the shop, which had been founded in 1902 by a Greek family. Under the Lubkas' ownership, Calfas Hatters was greatly expanded, supplying hats to various Connecticut politicians over the years, and once filling a 52-hat order for Sammy Davis Jr, who needed the hats for the band he was playing with in Las Vegas.
The hat measures 22” circumference around the sweatband, roughly equivalent to a size 7. Crown height is 4.25” and the brim width is 2.25”.
