Antique c.1910 Beaver Felt Top Hat Knox Henry Martin Co.

Superb antique Knox New York top hat made from beaver felt for Henry Martin, a Utica furrier, dates to circa 1910. It features silk faille for the hat band and brim edging, and a wool underbrim. Lined in silk (with a moiré pattern at the top of the crown), it has a 3" wide leather sweatband that is clean and supple.

The embossing in the crown contains the Knox logo ("Extra Quality, Registered, Moveo et Proficio, Knox New York") above "Henry Martin Co, Utica, N.Y." along with the gold initials of the hat's original owner. There is also a slip of paper attached with the name "Burrell" written on it; I have no further information about it, but guess that it was a descendant's surname.

Knox New York was founded in 1838 by Irish immigrant Charles Knox. Henry Martin established his business in Utica, NY in 1857, both manufacturing and retailing furs, and served for a period as mayor of the city. He incorporated his business in 1905 (as "Henry Martin Company", as this hat is marked), and after his death in 1915 it was carried on for many years by his son Edwin, the company's president.

Measurements are: Crown height 6", brim 2" wide, and inner circumference 22". Condition is excellent, with just a touch of wear to the wool underbrim (photo #6 & #7).
