Victorian Fox Head & Riding Crop Gilt Stick Pin

Wonderful mid- to late Victorian gilt base metal stick pin features a (glass?) garnet-eyed fox head with a riding crop in his mouth. It measures 2 ¾" long and 1 1/8" from side to side (of the riding crop).

As Jack & Elynore Kerins, authors of "Collecting Antique Stickpins" report, the vogue for wearing stickpins to secure a gentleman's neckwear seems to have gotten underway thanks to Beau Brummel; it remained a popular jewelry item for both sexes into the 1930s. Hunting themed motifs (horses, horseshoes, riding crops, and foxes like this one) were quite popular in Victorian gentlemen's jewelry.

Excellent condition.
