Vintage early 1950s dressing gown in ruby red cotton velvet with wrap-over waist and sweeping full skirt has a narrow shawl collar amplified by what appears to be an older, handmade silk lace shawl. Attached just underneath the collar, this exquisite lace shawl extends 7.5" over the shoulders and dips 9" down the back.
Made without any side seams, the short-sleeved bodice is cleverly shaped with large, pieced inserts at either side, reaching to just beneath the shoulders and expanding to "points" that wrap around the front and back of the waist. The flaring, 3-gored skirt forms a full 360 degree circle.
With a full, handset red satin lining, the dressing gown hooks closed at two points, one midway down the collar and one to the left center of the waist, and there is an inner security tie. A 52" self-fabric tie belt is present, though my pictures do not show it.
No labels of any kind; this appears to be expertly home- or custom-sewn. Measurements are: Bust 36", shoulders 14", waist 26", hips 44", sleeves 8", bodice length 17.5" and overall length 56.5". Very good condition, with the velvet in excellent shape and age-related yellowing but no breaks to the antique lace.
