Vintage mid-1940s chocolate brown peeptoe slingbacks from famous shoemaker Herman Delman feature leaf-shaped cutouts on the vamps and the decade’s signature chunky heel. Leather sole and sock-liner (which is a matching color brown and attractively scalloped around the edges).
Shoes are embossed “Delman, New York Paris” in gold lettering, along with the slogan “The best shoes you can buy are the best buy!” and the distinctive Delman logo of a fashionably dressed woman being waited on in the shoe salon. (According to museum curator and fashion historian Jonathan Walford, author of “The Seductive Shoe: Four Centuries of Fashion Footwear”, in the 40s Delman was a high-end manufacturer who opened in-store shoe salons in Bergdorf Goodman and Saks 5th Avenue among other stores).
Measuring 9” from toe to heel along the sock-liner and 3” across the ball of the sole, the shoes are marked 6M and in excellent condition. A museum deaccession, they also have their inventory number and circa date (1945) written in ink on the soles.
