Antique 1885 Tiffany & Co. Sterling Silver Chatelaine Clip

Late 19th century Tiffany & Co. sterling silver chatelaine clip features an ornate monogram on front, and is dated 1885 on the reverse. Hallmarked "Sterling Silver", it has the initial M used between 1873-1891, during Edward Moore's directorship of the company.

The monogram is beautifully done, with the sinuous letters ("M W de S") twining around, over, and under one another to form an elegant design. The artistry of the engraving underscores Tiffany's eminence from the mid-19th century on, and is reminiscent of the iconic Yankees logo derived from an 1877 Tiffany-designed medal for the New York city police department.

Chatelaines and chatelaine purses were popular throughout the 19th century and at the turn of the 20th. An interesting bit of related history is that in 1907 Tiffany successfully persuaded the customs courts to treat silver sterling chatelaine purse frames and mountings as "articles of utility" rather than (higher tariff) jewelry.

Measuring 2 3/8" by 1 3/8", the clip weighs 26 grams and is in excellent condition.

(NOTE: The Dutch silver purse frame this was acquired with, pictured in photo #2, is available for sale separately, in my other listings).
