Georgina Ball Hughes (American 1829-1911) "Mia Bella" Watercolor
Considerable information on the artist and her family may be found on an excellent website concerning the Ball Hughes family (search the artist's name and it is one of the first results).
PROVENANCE: From the inscriptions on the reverse, the painting was purchased for 8 guineas by Mr Ralph and then given by James Ralph to his daughter, Elizabeth, in January 1880. On the lowest calculation (retail price index) 8 guineas represents £620 in today's money.
CONDITION: In very good condition, the colours fresh with minimal fading. Two small spots, possibly foxing, one near the edge at 9 o'clock the other on her shawl where it goes over her head at 2 o'clock. We have not examined this painting out of its frame. The frame has age-related stable stress cracks in the decorative moulding but no damage.
BIOGRAPHY: Georgina Ball Hughes (American 1829-1911) was one of two daughters of Robert Ball Hughes (1804-1868) a noted British-American artist and sculptor. She was well known as an accomplished painter who exhibited at the Boston Art Association in 1843, the Boston Art Club in 1873 and 1877, and at the Royal Academy in London in 1889. Her Mother Eliza, an art teacher, also exhibited 4 drawings with her at the Boston Art Club in 1873. Georgina also taught drawing for many years in the public high school in Brookline, MA. In 1866, at the urging of her mother, Georgina purchased the family home, Sunnyside, in Dorchester, MA. Robert and Eliza continued to live there, probably with Georgina at times. She spent much of her time (reportedly 23 years) in London, England working as an accomplished artist. Georgina never married and died in the home in 1911.
