This 8 ½ inch tall doll has been created from the remains an old mohair fur covered toy, probably a bear. Most of the fur has been worn off the body. The cloth head has been added and crude embroidered facial features added. The little doll wears an old white hand sewn petticoat and a blue print fabric dress. I really don't know what to say about this doll. It has to be from the early 20th century because of the mohair bear body but the clothing fabric appears older. Many questions remain unanswered. Did the little bear belong to a child who simply loved all the fur off and then wanted a doll? Did some loving adult or the child herself attempt to resurrect her treasured toy with clothing and a new embroidered face? Who knows? In any case, the little doll certainly would be an interesting and unique addition to any primitive folk art collection.
