Mary Hoyer Composition Doll in Pink Crochet Skating Outfit
This 14 inch all composition doll, circa the 1930s, is jointed at the neck, shoulders, and hips. She is marked in raised lettering on her back, "THE//MARY HOYER// DOLL." According to Ursula Mertz in "Collector's Encyclopedia of American Composition Dolls," "Mary Hoyer started her career as a designer of knitted and crocheted garments for children. The home instruction booklets for these fashions were published by yarn companies and the Hoyers themselves. Soon, Mrs. Hoyer decided to add matching garments for dolls and was looking for a suitable doll that might serve as a model (234)." The dolls were sold by mail with accompanying instructions for knitting and crocheting clothes. This doll has her original mohair wig and sleep eyes with full eyelashes. The composition is in very good condition. There is one small split in the composition above the right eye and some slight overall crazing. She also wears vintage shoes and socks that, I believe, are original to her. The four piece crocheted skating outfit includes panties, a skirt, a top, and a hat. She also wears vintage skates and white socks.
