This 11 inch tall doll was created by the German firm of Cuno & Otto Dressel circa 1896. As part of their Portrait Series, he represents Uncle Sam. This doll has a bisque socket head and a composition and wood jointed body. Uncle Sam has blue glass eyes and his original white mohair wig and goatee. He wears a patriotic costume representing the red, white and blue. Some elements of the outfit appear original while others are excellently crafted, but later, replacements. I love his original black boots. His head is incised "S/1/Germany" on the back of the neck and head. The head is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The body retains its original finish. What a great character to add to a doll collection!
