Papier Mache Doll Made by Voit for the French Market
This 24 inch tall doll, circa the 1840s, was created in Germany by Johann Andreas Voit for the French market. These dolls are typically called French papier mache dolls as the fashionable clothing and hairstyles were added in France to sell to French patrons. This doll has glass eyes and an open mouth with teeth. She also retains her original tacked on French human hair wig. She has a French type pink tint kid leather lady body. The head is in very good condition with no repaint or repair. There is an old crack on the left shoulder along the mold line. She wears clothing that I believe is original to her including white cotton underclothing, a blue striped cotton skirt, a white cotton blouse, and a lace trimmed white cotton apron. This is a beautiful example of an early papier mache doll. Additional information on this type doll with photographs of similar dolls can be found in Christiane Grafnitz's wonderful book entitled, "German Papier-Mache Dolls 1760-1860."
