This 13 ½ inch tall doll was created by Norah Wellings circa 1920s-30s, in Wellington, Shopshire, England. She is known for wonderful dolls created from velvet, velveteen, plush, and felt. This character doll is made of velveteen. He/She has a great character face with the much desired glass eyes and a wide brown mohair wig. Linda Edward in her book "Cloth Dolls From Ancient to Modern," states "Her [Wellings] black dolls are some of the finest cloth character faces ever made" (95). I love the glass eyes, dimples, and open/closed mouth with painted teeth. The doll is jointed at the neck, shoulders, and hips. The fingers and toes are individually delineated with stitching. He/she is in very good clean condition with some slight age discoloration to the gold pants.
