Large Antique Cloth Philadelphia Rag or Sheppard Baby with Endearing Character Face
This 22 inch tall Philadelphia Rag Baby is just unbelievable. He is so appealing and reminds me of the Martha Wellington cloth dolls. According to Linda Edward in "Cloth Dolls From Ancient to Modern," "Philadelphia or Sheppard babies were made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1900. These dolls were sold in the infant's department of the J.B. Sheppard & Co. store which was in business from 1860-1935" (41). The babies have molded stockinette faces with a vertical seam running up the back of the head. The facial features are oil painted. Most of the dolls look like babies, but, this little guy, looks like a toddler. He has especially deep set eyes and great "chipmunk cheeks." There is the typical wear to the paint over the stockinette but no repaint. The body is also stockinette with painted lower arms, legs, head, and shoulder plate. The boy wears a darling red check one piece cotton outfit with knit undershirt and cotton diaper. I will leave the washing of the clothing to the new owner. I tend to like my doll clothing in original condition but this outfit, I am sure, would brighten with a gentle wash. If you have been waiting for a great Philadelphia Rag Baby, here he is. If you have a Philadelphia Baby that looks like an infant, here is an opportunity to adopt a toddler brother.
