This 21 ½ inch tall doll has a 5 ½ inch shoulder head with a cloth and kid body. The head has molded and painted facial features and blond hair with deep comb marks. The back of the head is incised, "189-9." The head was created by the C.F. Kling & Company Porcelain Factory in the 1880s. The head has no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is one small cheek rub on the left cheek. The body is in good sturdy condition. It appears that the leather of the upper arms has been replaced sometime in the past. The hip joints are rivet jointed and the lower legs are cloth. The doll wears white cotton underclothing and an antique pink cotton dress. The dress has age discoloration and significant fabric wear. It is still pretty on the doll but is definitely in a fragile state. I always love the gentle pensive expressions on these early Kling dolls.
