An exquisite, perfectly carved pendant of water buffalo bone (bubalus bubalis) is the focus of this unusual necklace. (Story to follow.) It is strung with sterling silver cones and button beads, granite nuggets, and amber onyx rounds, with sterling rounds as spacers. The necklace is 20-3/4 inches around and fastens with a beautiful Turkish sterling silver hook clasp.
The pendant did not come with a story, but curiosity made me inquire about it of the Balinese vendor. Here is what Ketut wrote to me:
The pendant is based on the story of how human greed is never satisfied with the treasure it has, and this makes people behave like animals. One day, this man met a king named Ki Ageng Penandaran. The king was not happy with the man's behavior and had a curse put on him which turned him into a human-headed sheep.
I simply adore the face on this sheep-man and hope you will, too. I don't think he looks greedy at all, but maybe that's what being a sheep does to one. I hope I never have to find out. And if the price of the necklace makes you think I should, I assure you that I priced it low for what it contains. Exquisite Balinese pendants do not come cheap, and I've fallen in love with them, so there will be more to come.
I also assure you that this is truly a one-of-a-kind necklace that you will treasure. (There's that word again!) Thank you for visiting my shop today. You are my treasure.
