White Italian Coral Necklace with 14K Gold Clasp

Coral necklaces were often worn by children as protective amulets. Coral is believed to stop bleeding and regulate the circulatory system, protect from evil spirits, and to ward off hurricanes.

CONDITION is lovely. Strung on silk, I have not had them restrung. These are beautiful beads, hand carved with a small irregularity here and there, and although there are small areas of pink and the faint coloration of a few beads shows most dramatically against pure white as in the photos, the impression of this necklace is much like that given in the picture on my old mannequin... pure creamy white. I would guesstimate a date in the first half of the 20th C with a later restringing. The wearable length is 18", a great, versatile length.
