Antique Clipper Sled in Original Paint - 19th C - Folk Art - Americana - Primitives - Sleigh

This charming wooden bodied clipper sled still boasts its marvelous decorative paint, extravagant leaves and flourishes in reds, greens, and yellows. From a time when toys were hand made and thought was put into even humble items to make them beautiful, this sled resonates with the happy laughter of generations of children. A profoundly evocative object and the kind of knockout designer piece that can 'make' a seasonal display.

CONDITION is what it is. This sled was obviously used and loved for many years. The paint is worn, but fabulous. At some point the main board was broken toward the back and lovingly repaired by carefully shaping a 'support' board and applying it to the bottom of the sled so that it spanned the break and served as a sturdy reinforcement... clearly this sled and its beautiful paint were both valued by its owner. I believe the iron runners were hand forged while the arched undercarriage supports were cast. The wood that ran along the tops of the now rusted runners is gone in places, and the arched supports which were once screwed to this wood are now attached to the runners with old wire in the places where the wood is missing. This isn't something that mitigates the charm of this wonderful piece, but it's probably better suited to the genteel life of a treasured antique. Overall length is 36 1/4", overall width is 14". The platform stands 7" off the ground, with the tips of the runners standing 8" tall.

This clipper sled is perfect as an eye-popping winter centerpiece. It can deliver a load of presents under your Christmas tree, or be a focal point hung over a warm winter hearth. It speaks of childhood laughter and dreams, conjures a simpler time. Let your imagination soar... Enjoy!
