Antique American Stoneware Butter Crock - 19th C Butter Tub - Country Kitchen
This wonderful butter crock was probably used with cloth or paper tied around the top. Butter storage crocks often had lids, but I don't think this piece ever did. The top edge is glazed and there is no evidence of the significant wear you would expect to find from a lid had there been one, and there is no lip or groove commonly found on lidded examples. Curious.
CONDITION is great. There is some expected fine light crazing, but no chips, cracks or hairlines. This piece was obviously used in its day, as evidenced by some darkened pops on the interior bottom, along with some kiln debris caught in the glaze during manufacture. The outside bottom shows marks from the kiln stilts during manufacture, and a few small and inconsequential glaze flakes. Height varies between 4 1/4" and 4 3/16" on this wonderful hand potted piece, and the top diameter is 6" give or take.
A fantastic old country piece for a collector. Treat yourself or gift somebody special. Enjoy!
