A charming pair of children's shoes, hand carved from wood, and hand painted with crossed American and French flags to commemorate the end of World War 1.
These little French shoes are a Folk Art souvenir item brought home at the end of the war rather than a commercially produced item, possibly even an old pair of French Sabot that was painted at the end of the war, as there seems to be some slight wear on the bottoms. They are hand shaped in the traditional style of French Sabot, worn by workers in France from somewhere around the 16th through the 19th C.
CONDITION is as shown. These shoes show all the charming idiosyncrasies of hand work in the carving with an old chip at one heel. The old surface has achieved a wonderful patina, just what you'd hope to find... take a look at the photographs. Each little shoe measures 7 1/4" in length and 2 1/2" in width on the outside, and 2 3/4" high.
A wonderful old piece of Folk Art ... and we all know the appeal of the American Flag. A piece of history really. Enjoy!
