A fantastic, giant pear with a marvelously tactile surface and a subtle blush on one side. I've always fancied out-of-scale pieces (think Claes Oldenburg), and that is precisely what drew me to this marvelous pear... the artist's intention to ask the viewer to experience reality from a different perspective, through a different lens.
The technical challenge of creating a piece of ceramic art of this size necessitates that there be no air pockets in the firing, so leaving a place for the air be released is necessary, and cleverly achieved in this piece by leaving a hole where, if this were a real pear, the stem would be. On most ceramic sculpture this is done on the bottom or some other inconspicuous spot, so placing the opening where it is on this piece was an artistic choice.
This sculpture is not glazed on the interior nor is the outer finish impervious to water, so it was never intended for use as a container or vase and is unsuitable as such, but rather it was created as a piece of art. And although it is almost instinctive to display this beautiful sculpture 'upright' (standing on its 'blossom' end), it comes with no instructions and it is equally valid to display it in a recumbent position so as to show the finely modeled detail of the 'blossom' end and the sensual, tactile mottled surface.
CONDITION is grand with no problems to report. Signed by the 'blossom' end. Measures approximately 10 1/2" tall and 7 1/2" in diameter.
Be forewarned, touching this intriguing piece is almost irresistible, then the questions will begin.. it's a real conversation starter. It will make you smile, maybe even laugh, I promise. Enjoy!
