Antique Folk Art Sign - Americana - Hand Painted Artist's Advertising Sign - Naive - Primitive
This fantastic sign is a curious mixture of worn, textured, stylized lettering flanked by silver or aluminum painted figural flourishes that withstood the weather quite well, making for an unconventional contrast and producing, finally, all these many years later, an idiosyncratic object with an eccentric appeal. There's something solid and honest about this piece, but quirky too, and strangely modern at the top with its use of lower case. It reads:
a b bitterling
artist
and decorator
PAINTING
in all its branches
SCENERY
MURALS
FURNITURE
DECORATIONS
STENCILS
SKETCHES
For the Home - Club or Business
I am told that this sign was originally produced and hung in the Catskills to advertise a local business.
CONDITION is fantastic. The weathering has produced an incomparable patina, the choice of words slightly quaint, outdated... not the punchy sound bites we're used to in this age of electronic everything. The hooks are still sturdy, and appear to be handmade, and the back is a beautiful, pure blue. Measures 24" wide x 36 1/4" tall x 1 5/8" thick, exclusive of the hooks which add about an inch to the height, and weighs nearly 22 pounds.
A first rate piece of Americana, this beautiful American Folk Art Sign is a decorator's dream. Enjoy!
