Antique Egermann Bohemian Goblet Vase - Ruby Red Cut to Clear
The cut and etched decoration is typical of Friedrich Egermann's work, displaying motifs of chateau, shell, and stag that he originated. On this piece the decoration is unusually dense and asymmetrical, a harbinger perhaps of the Japanese influence which was to power late 19th C French art to a controversial crossroads. There are small clear polished spots around the etched borders of the cartouches, and one small area looks to have been touched with an amber stain as well as the ruby, an additional decorative touch.
CONDITION is very nice, with one small chip at the bottom of the foot, and a few tiny spots of loss to the ruby stain. There is also an inclusion (I think), but definitely a manufacturing event, also on the foot. Condition exceptions are all visible in the last photograph. Measures 8 1/4" tall overall, with a diameter of 4" at the top and 4 1/8" at the foot.
In an interesting discussion of the term 'mint' as used to describe antique glass, the author and authority on cut glass, Carl U. Fauster said "...my advice is to use the following guideline. If the imperfection does not detract from the main feature of the piece, (possibly unnoticeable at an arm's length or if properly placed on a display cabinet shelf), it is then absolutely acceptable... If all collectors will look for the important features of a piece of collectible glass, using common sense regarding imperfections and avoiding the term "mint," it will be more realistic for all collectors, both beginning and advanced."
This is a fantastic piece of antique glass that will be a standout in any collection. Perfect for the season. Enjoy!
