19th C Charcoal and Chalk on Brown Paper - Girl with a Sheaf of Wheat

A beautiful drawing done in charcoal and chalk on brown paper, still framed in its original antique American Walnut frame. Drawing on dark paper has been a favorite medium of artists for many centuries, and this is a lovely example.

This charming farm girl sits barefoot, cradling a sheaf of wheat in her arms, a kerchief tied on her head holding back her cascading curls. She has a simple, wholesome appeal, her eyes sparkle and she smiles with straightforward, honest pleasure.

CONDITION is grand. This beautiful antique drawing is framed in its original 19th C American Walnut frame with bubbly glass, original wood back, and square nails that look to be in their original holes. I don't believe the frame has ever been opened. There is a small area of minor toning on the bottom left that corresponds to a place where the two original backing boards meet and were taped, showing that this piece is as originally framed. The gold filet looks to have been touched up with gold paint at some time. Unsigned. Measures 16 3/4" x 21 7/8" overall, with a sight size of 13 1/2" x 18 5/8".

An utterly charming piece that is a gentle reminder of a simpler time. Enjoy!
