A beautiful example of 19th C Berlin Needlepoint. The scene looks to be the meeting of lovers in a forest, and the style is that of the Medieval tapestries of the Musee de Cluny in Paris.
Several sizes are used for the stitching, making the detailed rendering of the faces most precise with the tiniest delicate petit point stitches, followed by somewhat larger stitches used for clothing and other objects, with the largest employed for the rich red background and black border.
CONDITION is excellent with only a few missing stitches that are difficult to spot. The embroidery is framed in a gold wooden molding without glass. There is some minor loss to the gold on the lower right corner which would be easy to touch up, I'll be happy to do it for you, just ask when ordering. Measures 23 5/16" x 29" overall, with the colored portion of the piece inside the black border measuring approximately 15 11/16" x 21" - 21 5/16" (its a bit irregular).
This is a beautiful antique piece, an excellent example of the embroiderer's art. Enjoy!
