Georgian Silk Embroidery of a Young Woman
These two scenes are happy scenes of lovers, not mourning scenes, and so are among my favorites. Has this young woman just set her bird free or is she trying to capture it? Birds have been symbolic of many things throughout history, freedom, spirit, love, peace- perhaps it's their ability to fly and the fact that they seem to be a conduit between our terrestrial realm and the heavens.
CONDITION is good as you see it. There is loss to the silk sky background and one hand as there often is on these old silk pieces, but the wonderful stitching is all intact and wonderful in its variety. The sash of this girl matches the sash of the young man in the companion piece to this, RL-862 in my shop. There are some losses, as shown, to the original frame, but it's wonderful nevertheless, and fantastic to still have it at all after all these years. Measures 8 1/2" x 10 5/8" overall, with a sight size of 6 1/4" x 8 1/2".
A fine addition to a collection of these embroideries, most especially if you decide to keep the pair together and purchase both. Enjoy!
