American Folk Art Mirror by Peter Hunt - Americana

Fantastic piece by American Folk Art legend and entrepreneur extraordinaire, Peter Hunt, a flamboyant, creative, and generous spirit who took root in Cape Cod.

Setting aside for a moment the rumors of flowing capes, afghan hounds, Scott and Zelda, and a red-headed 'dwarf' (Google him, I'm not kidding), Hunt actually set up studio and shop on Cape Cod where he created a style of painting and decoration based on traditional folk art forms and motifs. A charming, relentless, and successful self-promoter, he became a society darling among the wealthy folk who summered on the Cape, who both enjoyed his colorful presence as a dinner guest, and bought his creations to decorate their cottages and homes.

Ahead of his time, Hunt often recycled antiques and 'elderlies' as his canvases (like this wonderful mirror). He was 'green' before the color became a movement.

This fantastic mirror is classic Peter Hunt. Unsigned, as much of his work was, it came from the estate of a woman who purchased it directly from Hunt on the Cape.

I'm not sure how this particular piece was created, but the mirroring on the back of the glass looks to have been cut away entirely in some places for the figures, and otherwise obscured with loose ghostly brushstrokes, it's a lovely effect. The reverse painted figures, protected by the thick glass, remain as bright and crisp as the day they were painted.

CONDITION is great with some wear and minor losses to the frame and the mirroring, these were mostly pre-existing conditions when Hunt chose this piece as a canvas. Measures 18 1/2" x 33 1/2", with a sight size of 15 3/4" x 30 1/2".

There has been a resurgence of interest in Peter Hunt's work recently and it is being actively sought by a new generation of collectors. Here is a chance to own a fabulous, original piece by Peter Hunt. Enjoy!
