Mid 19th C Hand Colored American Print - Children, Cats , and Dogs - Black Walnut Frame
The setting is a fashionable early to mid Victorian parlor with heavily carved Rococo Revival Belter style furniture. Other notable period details include a book bag made of carpet (carpetbag), and an old fashioned school slate on the floor. There's also a plant cutting in a glass of water on the table that looks like it must mean something, but I'm stumped.
CONDITION is good. There is some overall toning and discoloration, perhaps from condensation, and a small area of water damage on the title, only in the border. It is framed in it's original large American Black Walnut frame with original old wavy glass. There seem to have been several types of paint used to color this piece. An opaque white gouache that has retained it's bright color was used on the highlights, regular watercolor was used for most of the other colors, and some other type of paint for the hair. This is a charming, delightful piece with tremendous appeal. Aside from the title, it includes the following information printed below the image: "painted by L. M.Spencer - Lith. by A. Sirouy - Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1858 by W. Schaus, in the clerk's Office of the district Court of the United States for the Southern district New York." Measures 23 1/2" x 26 7/8" overall, with a sight size of 19 1/2" x 23", and an image size of 16" x 19 3/4".
This is a lovely, lively period print with immense magnetism, a quintessentially American image. You will be enchanted, I promise. Enjoy!
