"The Village Dandy - France" - E B & E C Kellogg Print with Antique Gilded Frame
The young gentleman 'dandy' looks to be flirting with a group of five young women. With a rose in his teeth, holding a large frond and a knife which he is using to whittle, his hat cocked back jauntily, and a handkerchief sticking out of his pocket, he seems to be strutting and carrying on with general silliness. Some of the women are amused and some seem quite immune to his charms. I believe it's poking fun at the antics of this cosmopolitan 'dandy' as he tries to impress these young rural women, he must seem a bit of an exotic creature to them.
E. B. & E. C. Kellogg took over the Kellogg family printing business in Hartford, CT and were among America's premier lithographic print makers from 1842 through the 19th C, their popularity rivaled only by Currier and Ives.
The frame is a beautiful, simple, gilded wooden molding, just the type that is so wildly popular right now, and would sell for several hundred by itself.
CONDITION is very good, with some toning and foxing as shown. Considering that this antique print has never been out of it's original frame with it's old wooden back, the condition is really excellent. The glass is old and wavy, just what you want to see. Measures 11 1/4" x 14 7/8" overall, with a sight size of 9 1/2" x 13".
A marvelous and uncommon image, I have not been able to find it cataloged or archived anywhere. And as I said, the frame on this piece is really worth the price of admission. Enjoy!
