Peafowl Spatterware / Spongeware Handleless Pearlware Tea Cup and Saucer
Condition is good with very minor crazing, the saucer or bowl has no chips, cracks, or real problems, just minor staining on the underside of the deep bowl, likely from the habit of pouring a bit of hot tea from the handleless cup into the saucer to cool before drinking it… different from our modern way of drinking from the cup. The cup has no chips, but there are two tight lines on the cup as shown, and some roughness to the glaze over the blue underglaze paint that happened in the manufacture. There is one small impressed mark underneath the saucer that resembles a clover or shamrock, I don't recognize it, if you do, please give me a shout. The saucer measures 6" in diameter and stands 1 1/4" tall, the cup measures 3 7/8" in diameter at the top and stands 2 1/2" tall.
A lovely pair, the shape is fine and crisply modeled with the pearlware glaze pooling blue underneath. These two old friends have been together for 200 years or so and display beautifully together. Enjoy!
