Whimsical French Trasferware Plate w/ Fishing Scene 1920's - Mavaleix & Granger - Faience - Transfer Ware

A nice example of early 20th C French two color transferware executed in blue and black. The whimsical fishing scene is appealing, the postures of the men men and boys comic and expressive. The blue floral border includes some seaweed decoration that adds an appropriate maritime element to the scene. I believe the text translates into English as "The people have not yet seen a fisherman catching a pike of 25 pounds on the Pont des Arts" (that would be The Bridge of the Arts)... or something like that, my French tenses may be a little shaky here.

P. M. de Mavaleix began a pottery business in 1908 which was closed in 1914 at the start of the first World War. It was reopened in 1920 in partnership with J. Granger, the company was renamed "Mavaleix & Granger" and the "GM" back stamp that you see on this piece came into use. Granger became the sole proprietor of the business only two years later in 1922 when the name was changed to "J. Granger & Co.", but he continued to use the "GM" mark until the factory was closed in 1938. I believe this piece is from the earlier years of production.

Condition is great with no chips, cracks, repairs, or other problems... just the way you like to see old pieces of pottery like this, with marks from the kiln stilts on the back. Measures 7 1/2" in diameter. 1920's.

This would look great on a wall or mantle. A nice piece to add to a collection, yours or a friend's... and if you've got a friend who just loves to tell fishing stories, well, look no further.
