Wonderful antique French bulle de savon opaline glass, some of the finest in the world, fashioned into a lovely compote, with dore bronze mounts, rim and foot... simple and stunning.
'Bulle de savon' literally translates as 'soap bubble', and refers to opaline glass like this that seemingly glows with an inner light, changeable and mysterious like the whirling colors on the surface of a bubble. Blue when seen against a dark background, glowing orange when transmitting light, this beautiful glass has an inner fire.
Condition is great, with no chips, cracks, or repairs, and only the most minor spots of patina on the ormolu mounts. It is in almost untouched condition, even retaining the original paper label, which you almost never see. This beautiful piece measures 6 3/4" across the top, and stands 5 1/4" high, but somehow seems larger than these measurements suggest.
This is a beautifully proportioned piece with a deep, voluptuous curve to the bowl. The ormolu foot is decorated with sinuous vines and an alternating pattern of grapes and grape leaves. I can imagine large bunches of fragrant Concord grapes spilling over its golden lip in season... absolutely fabu!
