Fantabulous pair of gilded tie backs designed as hands holding freshly cut foliage, These beauties were likely used for bed hangings in the Georgian period, in fact, there is a little historical note etched on the back of one hand by a former owner... "1949 - 200 years old - taken off an old bed posts" (sic). Not entirely legible in the photo, and faint in person, but definitely there. I love finding little hidden messages from the past. They are a true pair in that they mirror each other and are ready again to hold back the finest drapes with panache.
Condition is grand. There are some superficial scratches, and the hardware may have been reattached at some point, but really, considering these are 200+ years old, they are in remarkable condition. The iron discs attach to the wall or bed post, and the small hook will hold a decorative cord and perhaps tassels. The secret note would suggest a mid 18th C date, could be, but I would say a little later, perhaps late 18th C or even early 19th C. No matter, they are stunners. The hands are approximately the size of small hands, with each tie back measuring between nine and ten inches overall.
These are simply wonderful, very finely made and modeled. Once I finished marveling at the elegant hands, I began to notice other details like the whorl on the end of the cut stems, the fingernails, and the graceful draping of the Georgian cuff. Jewelry for your home. Enjoy!
