This fantastic pair of Indian Clubs will be a standout in any collection. Highly decorative, yet eminently usable... just beautiful antique pieces.
Fashioned from at least four, or possibly five different types of wood that were joined together in layers and then hand turned on a lathe into their final graceful shape, with the star inlay likely being added last. This type of work is known today as 'segmented' or 'polychromatic' turning.
Indian Clubs were introduced into this country in 1862, when Sim. D. Kehoe, an American businessman and fitness enthusiast, saw them in England and began to produce and sell them in America. This was the very first of many fitness 'crazes' to sweep the US.
Swinging Indian Clubs was widely recommended, not only by physical fitness enthusiasts, but by spiritual leaders as well. Physical vigor and spiritual health were linked in a way that we are only beginning to rediscover.
Today, some fitness enthusiasts prefer to exercise with these antique clubs, feel they are valuable for far more than their mere weight, that their long history imparts an energy by which they bestow spiritual benefits that new clubs do not.
Condition is great with no real problems to report. They bear the marks and scars of hard years of use, these beauties have passed through many hands. They measure 23 1/2" and 23 3/4" tall respectively, the holes in bottom measure 2 3/4" deep, and they weigh 3 lbs 10.5 oz. and 3 lbs 11.5 ozs. I believe the holes in the bottom are a way for the maker to adjust the weight of newly finished clubs, and that these were originally four pounders, the weight loss being testament to their age as wood dries and loses water weight over the years.
Indian Clubs are increasingly sought after by collectors, and considered by many to be Folk Art objects, their sculptural form and simplicity, along with a richly patinated surface is appealing, and they look just fabulous grouped together in a display., complementing many styles of decorating, from Rustic to Mid - Century Modern.
These particular clubs are knockouts. Treat yourself or someone special.
