Pair of Antique Watercolor & Graphite Portraits
The boy's long curls and loose fitting robe are typical of the 19th C when boys often wore dresses when they were very young. And the girl wears a red coral necklace, a style popular for young girls in the US since colonial times. Most likely a brother and sister, this pair will delight you and yours for another hundred years.
Condition is good with some expected overall toning, and there are two stains on the portrait of the girl. Nevertheless, this enchanting pair of paintings will steal your heart. There is a light graphite sketch underlying the watercolor, and they are matted and framed as I found them with oval French mats. Each frame measures 16 1/4" x 20 1/2" overall, with the ovals measuring 11 1/2" x 15 1/2".
These children speak out to us across the years. Caught in pensive moods, the boy's expression penetrating, profound, the girl's eyes demurely downcast. They seem to have a secret only hinted at; lost in dreamy wistful thoughts their portraits are arresting and provoke contemplation. Bring them home, they will steal your heart.
