Four Romer / Roemer / Rummer Wine Glasses w/ Etched & Gilded Decoration

A set of beautiful glasses in the classic shape used for Germany's white Rhine wine, just in time for sharing a bottle of cool white on a warm lazy evening. The lively wheel cut and gilded design on the bowls make them real winners.

The origin of this 'Romer' shape dates back to the Alsace region of Medieval Germany / France. Beginning in the 16th C, Romer glasses evolved their more modern form with a ribbed stem replacing the prunts (blobs of glass first used in Ancient Rome) that had originally provided a grip on the stem, with decoration on the bowl in the form of etching, cutting, gilding, and enamel work also emerging.

Condition is excellent. I see no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is wear to the gold, particularly on the ribbed stems of these beautiful glasses where there is almost no gold left on three of the four. However, the shape of the stems carries the day, and the delicate gilded design on the bowls really pops. The size and shape of the four glass bowls vary a bit, testament to their being mouth blown. Each glass measures approximately 6" tall with a top bowl diameter of approximately 2".

So chill a bottle of your favorite crisp summer white, from Alsace... or Mendocino if you'd prefer and invite a couple of friends over... sit, relax, unwind.
