Oysters and scallops and conchs, oh my... this delightful set of plates is adorned with exceedingly delicate and exactingly detailed hand painted underwater scenes. Quite lovely.
Each of these little masterpieces displays a different grouping of sea shells surrounded by seaweed, with a wispy, watery blue intermingling throughout. Artist signed "Holcombe" on the back in gold.
Condition is fine, with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The fancy molded borders are painted green and accented with gold, and the T&V mark dates them between 1892 and 1907. There are a few raised white accents, most decorative on the lip of the conch, resembling a string of pearls. Each plate measures approximately 8 3/8" in diameter.
These special plates will display beautifully on a wall or in a cabinet. And certainly, press them into service now and then. Try some Seared Sea Scallops in Basil Cream, one of my own personal favorites... but I'm sure you've got your own special recipe. Enjoy!
