Maritime Oil on Canvas of a Ship Under Full Sail
This fine oil is done with a sure hand by a highly skilled artist. The impression of a windy, somewhat overcast day is evocative of salt spray and fresh air. Very nice.
The ship is flying a Polish flag, and the signature, although hard to read, shows the last four letters of the artists name to be "...wski." There is also an unclear date, I think "56" or "50", and I would take this to place the painting sometime in the 1950's.
Condition is excellent. The painting is in its original frame, wood with an inner canvas liner and gold painted filet. The varnish has yellowed a bit, and this painting is a good candidate for a light cleaning if you choose, but it is fine to look at just as it is. Measures 22 3/4" x 26 3/4" overall, with the sight size measuring 12 3/4" x 16 3/4".
A grand piece for those who love the ocean and its limitless horizons. It eloquently evokes the freedom and power of the open sea, along with the romance of antique wooden sailing ships.
