'Poesie' - Stone Sculpture Signed 'Prof. (Antonio) Garella'
Signed "Prof. Garella" on the right rear shoulder, she is mounted on a travertine base. Alabaster I believe, or possibly marble.
Antonio Garella, the 19th C Italian sculptor was born in 1864 and died in 1919. He lived and worked primarily in Bologna and Florence, and was very popular and well known. He worked on numerous public sculptures in Italy and exhibited his work, which he sometimes signed "Prof." (Professor), like this piece. There is a street named after him in Prato, the "Via Antonio Garella."
She stands 10¼" tall, with her base measuring 5½" x 11¾". There looks to be one leaf missing from her gilded bronze crown... bet you didn't notice, and there is wear to the wreath's gilding.
I'm not sure what the gold 'button' on the bottom means. Perhaps it is the symbol of the studio that mounted her or a gallery.
She typifies the turn of the century idealized view of feminine beauty, inspirational still.
