This fantastic Witch's Heart Pin from the era of the British Raj is fashioned out of materials as precious as the love it symbolizes... gold, emeralds, and pearls. Witches hearts with their curved tips have their origins in late Medieval times, and were first worn as protective amulets. But over the years their symbolic meaning has changed, and they are now given as love tokens indicating that the giver has been 'bewitched'... seriously charming.
Witches hearts were very popular in England and Scotland, so it's no wonder that the form was adopted by Indian jewelers who created this lovely brooch, probably for the English market during the years of the British Raj. This piece is a substantial size and weight... more appropriate for an adult than many Witches Hearts that were designed as amulets for children.
CONDITION is great, lightly hand marked with "14 CT INDIA" on one edge. The pearls are lustrous, white, and somewhat irregular; the emeralds have numerous inclusions, fissures, and irregularities as you would expect. The emeralds appear somewhat lighter color in the pictures than they actually are, this is from light reflecting off the background and being transmitted back through the stones... when worn their color is more like the four stones on the top of the heart. I would guesstimate a 20th C date, probably 1930's or 1940's. Measures approximately 1 3/4" north to south x 1 5/16" east to west.
If you've been bewitched by someone I can't think of a lovelier way to say so, the perfect gift for Saint Valentine's Day. This brooch will light up a lapel, a sweater, a hat, or would look fabulous fastened over a strand of antique natural pearls if you're lucky enough to have one. Enjoy!
Your brooch will arrive in a fine presentation gift box.
