Antique Hand Painted Clipper Sled - "Mascot" - Americana - Folk Art

A mascot by definition brings good luck, and I'll bet this exceptional sled has seen its share. The first child to own it must have felt lucky indeed to receive such a fine example of the Yankee arts, and lucky we all are to have had this fantastic 19th C example come to us in the 21st century so bright and in such fine condition. A beautiful example with gorgeous graphic appeal.

Clippers like this one are sleek and low to the ground; perhaps 'Rosebud' is the most iconic clipper of all time... remember Citizen Kane? The original movie prop sold to Steven Spielberg for $55,000.00, and the original prototype from which the prop was made sold 14 years later to a collector for $233,500.00. So this little sweetie is a bargain!

CONDITION is grand, the painted decoration is phenomenal, and that's what I always look for... some wear at the ends of the runners, but for the most part intact and a wonderful red / orange. Measures 44 1/2" long overall, 11 1/2" wide, and the bed sits only 4" off the ground (an exciting ride!), with the tips of the runners standing 7" off the ground.

These lovely old sleds conjure all the magic of winters past, holiday mornings, fresh fallen snow, kids bundled up, wind in your face, then hot cocoa after... sigh. This baby is certainly slope-ready should you wish, but more than likely you'll want to use it as the ultimate accessory for seasonal and holiday decorating. Maybe Santa will leave it by your hearth... I hear Mascots are lucky that way. Enjoy!
