Who's a good boy?... or girl. Be this little guy a Sheltie, Collie, Border Collie, Shetland Sheep Dog, Australian Shepherd... or some combination... the fact remains, he is adorable. This little dog's personality shines out from the canvas, he is alert, happy, and ready to play.
CONDITION is grand, this is a beautiful old painting. I'm not sure the frame is original, but the style is spot-on, and the frame has some age in any case since the corners have been recently reinforced on the back, (please see photographs). Signed at the lower left where the first few letters appear to form a monogram, which was a popular practice in the late 19th C and early 20th C. An interpretation of the artist's name along with the word "dog" is written on the back of the frame in graphite, probably by the framer in order to match the frame with the correct painting (please see photographs). Measures 16 3/4" x 13 1/4" overall, with a sight size of 11 5/8" x 8". The painting on its stretchers measures 12 1/4" x 8 1/2".
Rarely have I seen a pet's portrait that captures the love and loyalty you see in this painting. Man's (or woman's) best friend indeed. Enjoy!
