Antique Child's Cutter Sled / Sleigh in Original Red Paint with Song Bird - Folk Art - Primitives - American - 19th C - 1860 - 1900

The first nip of Autumn brings the smell of cider and wood smoke, and the promise of colder weather to come. Remember the first snow of the season when you were a kid? Maybe, just maybe, school would be let out and you could go play with your friends... snow men, snow angels, snowball fights, and best of all... sledding! This colorful hand painted beauty of a cutter sled conjures all that fun from a different era... apparently kids haven't changed all that much.

This elegant little sleigh is a cutter, designed for girls with its graceful curved steam bent runners and painted bird-on-a-branch decoration. Clippers were the boys models, lower to the ground and more streamlined like the famous 'Rosebud' from Citizen Kane, possibly the most well known child's sled of all time. Steven Spielberg bought the 'Rosebud' movie prop in 1982 for $55,000, and the original prototype was sold fourteen years later to another collector for $233,500... so this little treasure is a bargain. These old sleds are getting so very hard to find in such attractive condition.

CONDITION is beautiful with age appropriate wear. The bottom of the sled has what looks like a name and address written in pencil, I can't really make it out. There is wear to the paint in all the right places, and some scratches, probably from an old buckle. Please look at the photographs. The tow bar is missing and there is a wonderful old repair to the bottom front of one runner where two small pieces of iron have been bolted on like a splint and probably kept the sled in working order for many more years. Second half of the 19th C. Measures 29 1/2" long overall, 13 1/4" wide at the widest point (runner to runner at the back), and 10 3/4" tall to the top of the curved runners.

I've always loved old sleds and sleighs... I simply cannot resist them. I hold them and imagine the squeals of joy when its lucky first owner received it for Christmas or a winter birthday, the cold snowflakes she caught on her tongue while dragging it up the big hill behind the barn, and the exhilaration she must have felt whizzing down, wind in her face, hair streaming behind... I am transported back in time and feel the joy of that child whose sled I now hold. Call me a romantic... try it, you'll like it, I promise. These days of course, old sleds make fabulous seasonal centerpieces. Enjoy!
