I can hear the carnival barker now... "round 'n round she goes ladies and gentlemen, where she stops..." A fabulous piece of antique Americana that will look as good on your own wall as it did at the county fair or casino where it originally spun. A wonderfully decorative wheel with paint that is more graphic than on many.
This particular wheel was acquired from an estate near Saratoga Springs, NY, and is said to have come from a casino on the lake in Saratoga which burnt in the 1960's. There is a lot of history regarding Saratoga and its casinos, but the Hart-Agnew law, passed in 1908, effectively banned gambling in New York State after that date.
This wheel is double sided and is entirely hand painted on both sides, including the numbers. The pins are solid brass and different sizes on each side of the wheel, with the smaller pins set a bit closer together. The deep yellow, red, black and gold paint are still vibrant. Constructed of 'ply-wood' that measures a full 1 1/8" thick, not the modern product we are familiar with today. The well worn central hub appears to be aluminum and bears the name "POP BAKER" of Detroit Michigan.
I have had a mounting board and 'clacker' custom made after the original that allows the wheel to safely mount to your wall and spin... no muss, no fuss, I've done all the work. You can leave the board as it is (natural pine), or paint it to match your wall. You can also hang the wheel with either side facing out, and easily switch it around for a different look. Use it to decide whose turn it is to do the dishes... or maybe even a more interesting wager.
CONDITION is good with normal expected wear. The paint is crazed in places with some scratches, and there are also some small areas of loss of the surface layers at the edge in a few places... I've tried to show the worst areas in the photos, and really it would be suspect if it was pristine. Measures 30" in diameter not including the mounting board which extends 5" above the wheel.
So step right up ladies and gentlemen... it's your turn to spin the wheel... Enjoy!
