An outstanding large period Georgian Silk Embroidery that still retains its fabulous original verre eglomise mount with decorative stars along with its original period gesso and gilt frame. The silk panel presents the popular Bible story of the infant Moses being found in the bull rushes.
This is a beautifully embroidered piece displaying abundant and exceptionally fine and varied stitchery along with a complicated, highly detailed design. The bulrushes and swaddling, the women's robes, the foliage and town in the distance are all depicted in amazing detail... right down to a vine shown climbing up one of the trees on the left. This is a particularly fine piece.
CONDITION is excellent with only one tiny spot of damage to the silk in the sky at about 1:00 o'clock on the oval... these old silk pieces, especially large ones like this, are seldom found in such marvelous condition. You can just see the edge of this embroidery peeking out at about 6:00 - 7:00 o'clock from the eglomise mount which is in the most remarkably fine condition. The original backing that was typically wood on these old Georgian pieces was removed at some point, but this is probably why the condition on this piece is so good as it was the acid in the old wooden backings that deteriorated the silk. The paper dust cover has been ripped which allows you to see the back of the embroidery recessed into the frame, but it can easily be replaced should you choose... I'd be happy to put a new paper dust cover on for you, but you might prefer to have a look at the back of this extraordinary piece. Measures 24" x 20 1/2" overall with a sight size of 20" x 16 1/2". The oval of visible embroidery is 16" x 13 1/8", and the corner stars measure approximately 3 1/4" across. The frame is 2" thick.
I have another embroidery listed for sale, ( RL-1010 ), which I believe is a companion to this piece, the subject is Moses in the Bulrushes. I acquired the two pieces together and they are framed alike and less than 1/2" different in overall size. Please take a look, it would be wonderful to hang these two pieces together.
Georgian silk embroideries as wonderful as this one are becoming more and more scare. I try to purchase them when I can, but I seldom find large pieces like this in such good condition. Enjoy!
