19th Century Miniature ~ Madonna and Jesus Porcelain Enamel ~ German Sterling Frame
Here’s a remarkable Antique treasure. This was, we think, a miniature replica of a famous painting of the times. It is Beautifully executed with crisp detail and strong colors. It is a porcelain-enamel. The white, (visible at the very edges of the gold foil) is the porcelain body that the paint gets fired on, which makes it enamel. The background is 24 carat gold foil. The same gold foil adorns Madonna’s sleeve. There’s lots of detail in her patterned shawl and the folds of her dress. Their expressions are sweet and open.
The Shrine-like 2 door Sterling frame also holds tremendous appeal. Both doors are hinged to open and close smoothly, and are held closed by a hinged clasp. The doors have an attractive grid pattern, and are attached to a ribbed sterling base that is mounted on black stone (marble, onyx, or agate) with screw on pins. The sterling is gilded. The back of the frame is marked Germany, Sterling, and a manufacturer’s mark of MV.
Measurements are 2 7/16” from top to the bottom of the hard stone base. Width is 1 ¾”. Weight is 76.3gms
Condition is Excellent and Unpolished. There are some long scratches on the back of the frame. The hard glaze protecting the painting has only the merest hint of tiny superficial scratches, not visible without magnification.
