Hand Painted Dogwood Porcelain Plate, Twentieth Century, Artist Signed
This gorgeous cluster of Dogwood blossoms was painted 97 years ago on this porcelain plate. The colours chosen are wonderfully blended. The white petals are tipped in the palest pink, darkening to maroon tips with gold and chartreuse centers. The accompanying leaves are softly muted shades of greyed greens and bluish tones. These dissolve into a misty teal background to make the blossoms appear to dance on the surface. The eight scallops along the edge are enhanced with 1/2" of brilliant gold! The back is unadorned, but the foot is drilled to allow for hanging this exquisite work of art. The plate is artist signed and dated, "L.Burke, 1910".

This is likely an amateur artist and although the black that was chosen for this work, was unmarked, it is porcelain and of the era. Although many porcelain artists of this era chose blanks from Limoges France, or Austria, it was not uncommon for unmarked blanks to be chosen for their shapes and what that would lend to the final creation. Collectors of hand painted porcelain know that the "painting" is the real collection! This one is no exception.
