Rare Early Staffordshire Dark Blue and White Transfer Plate - English View - Riley

Our research came from an old old china book which had and extensive list of patterns, by maker, in the back.This particular pattern is listed in the stock inventory of J.(John) W. Riley and is titled, "King's Cottage, Windsor Park" . It is from his English Views Series. It likely dates to the earlier of the possible dates...prior to the "& W." being added to the pottery/factory.

It is a very uncommon plate to find. The Transfer mark on the back reads, "THE KINGS COTTAGE, WINDSOR PARK, WARRANTED". The "makers mark" is an impressed daisy or star form.

The border is described as "dark blue with large scrolls". We did find a picture in the china book that had the identical printed edge (to confirm this maker).

It was NOT an easy plate to identify! Lot's of reading, notes and finally a triumph we could share.

Basically it is in terrific condition for a "common" every day type item that's been around for about 205 years! The plate shows light to moderate wear. There are a few cut marks on the surface, common to these transfer plates, but none are deep. There is a kiln mark (fine grog/sand is a blended part of the clay mix and if it is near the surface it pops during the firing and the glaze doesn't stick in that spot). You'll find it at about the "3:00pm" spot between the border and central cottage scene. There are also 3 very small trivet marks about 3/4" in from the rim.....proof of age.....(These are not considered flaws but were necessary when stacking multiple plates in the kiln to fire them.)
