Antique cross of Bishop Leon-Adolphe Amette,Bishop of Bayeux, France ,dated August 4th, 1900

This is a bishop´s cross which was given by the city of Bayeux in France to their bishop Leon- Adolphe Amette 1850-1920. He was bishop of Bayeux from 28.11.1898- 21.2.1906 and became in 1908 archbishop of Paris. The cross is of magnificent craftmanship with finest enamel work in the center depicting the Holy Virgin with the little Jesus. The cathedral of Bayeux is dedicated to the Holy Virgin (cathedral de Notre Dame). Around the figure are engraved the following words: "Capit insignum ecclesiae S.Mariae Bayeux" = He receives the sign of the church of the Holy Mary of Bayeux. The four edges of the cross are decorated with four cabochons of Chalcedony. The cross is made of Vermeille. On the back side the cross has finest silver and gold engraving. In the center there is the apostle S. Peter and coat of arms on the sides. The cross has the engraved date of August 4th ,1900 The cross is in perfect condition, there is no damage of any kind.
