Russian Icon of the Mother of God of the Sign. The Icon has a detailed and fine silver plated metal oklad. In the middle of the Icon there is the Madonna with the Christ child.She is surrounded by twelve Saints. On top there is God Father. The oklad has a rich decoration with flowers. The faces are very detailed painted with tempera on wood. The Icon is in perfect condition and is dated at the beginning of the 20th century. Length: 12,6"(32cm) Width: 10,62"(27cm)

The Icon of the Mother of God of the Sign is one of the most venerated Icons in Russia. Its history is linked with the history of Novogorod, which in old Russia was the cultural and commercial center of the North of Russia and one of Russia´s first cities.Similar to Constantinople, the city has made the Icon the palladium, a sign of special protection by the Mother of God.
